Spain ( Khyber Point )Spain has announced sweeping sanctions on Israel in response to what Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described as the ongoing “genocide of Palestinians” in Gaza. The move marks one of the strongest policy shifts by a European nation against Israel since the conflict escalated.
In a televised address on Tuesday, Sánchez declared that Spain would ban all arms exports to Israel and suspend defense-related trade agreements. Furthermore, ships and aircraft carrying weapons to Israel will no longer be allowed to use Spanish ports or airspace, signaling Madrid’s determination to exert maximum pressure.
The Spanish prime minister also announced restrictions targeting individuals accused of involvement in atrocities against Palestinians. Those linked to what Sánchez termed as “genocidal actions” will be barred from entering Spain. In addition, imports of products manufactured in illegal Israeli settlements will be completely prohibited.
These measures come at a moment of heightened tension in international diplomacy. Following the decision, Spain recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv, underscoring the deterioration in bilateral relations. In retaliation, Israel’s foreign minister condemned Spain’s actions and imposed counter-sanctions on two Spanish ministers.
The development follows similar steps by Belgium, which recently recognized Palestine as a state and introduced bans on Israeli flights and settlement goods. Analysts suggest Spain’s actions could encourage other European nations to take tougher stances, potentially deepening Israel’s isolation on the global stage.
By directly linking its policy to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Spain has positioned itself as a leading European critic of Israel’s conduct. The move reflects growing frustration among Western governments over Israel’s military operations, which human rights groups say disproportionately target civilians.
