Karachi( Khyber Point)The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert for Karachi, warning of intense monsoon rains today with the potential to exceed 100 millimeters in certain areas. Authorities have cautioned residents about the risk of urban flooding as multiple rain spells are expected to hit the city.
Meteorologists reported that four to six heavy rain spells are likely, triggered by a deep depression moving into Sindh from India. The system is described as unusual, with an uncertain and complex trajectory, making rainfall intensity unpredictable across different neighborhoods of Karachi.
The warning follows yesterday’s showers, which already caused waterlogging in low-lying areas. On Monday, the long-dry Malir River experienced flash flooding due to persistent rains, raising concerns over infrastructure readiness.
In anticipation of severe downpours, Jinnah Sindh Medical University has postponed all scheduled examinations for the day. The administration announced a work-from-home policy, shifting classes online to ensure the safety of students and staff. “This decision prioritizes the protection of lives and property,” the vice chancellor stated.
The PMD, alongside Karachi’s district administration, has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from electricity poles, exposed wires, and flood-prone spots. Emergency services remain on standby, and residents have been advised to immediately contact rescue authorities in case of emergencies.
This forecast raises renewed concerns about Karachi’s preparedness for extreme weather. Despite repeated warnings in previous years, the city continues to face challenges with drainage, infrastructure, and urban planning. With heavy monsoon showers set to intensify, authorities fear a repeat of past flooding crises.
