Nigeria Boat Tragedy Leaves 60 Dead Dozens Missing

At least 60 people have died and dozens remain missing after a boat capsized in Nigeria’s northern Niger state, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to international media reports, the vessel departed from the riverside community of Tungan Sule in Malale district, heading toward the town of Dugga. The overloaded boat struck a submerged tree trunk in the river, causing it to overturn in the middle of its journey.

Local officials said the ill-fated vessel was carrying more than 100 passengers, many of whom were traders and villagers traveling to local markets. Rescue teams managed to save several survivors, but the death toll has climbed to at least 60, with fears that it could rise further as search operations continue.

“Many bodies have been recovered, and several others are still missing. Our rescue teams are working around the clock to locate survivors and recover the deceased,” a state emergency services spokesperson said.

Boat accidents are tragically common in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season when rivers swell and become more dangerous. Experts note that overcrowding and poorly maintained vessels significantly increase the risks. Safety protocols are often ignored, and most boats operate without life jackets, leaving passengers vulnerable in emergencies.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has witnessed multiple deadly boat disasters in recent years. Analysts stress that urgent regulatory reforms, stricter safety checks, and better enforcement of passenger limits are necessary to prevent further tragedies.

As families mourn the victims of the Niger state disaster, rescue workers continue their search for those still unaccounted for, with hopes of finding survivors fading with each passing hour.
