Lahore( Khyber Point) A major flood emergency has been declared across Punjab after India released large volumes of water into the rivers Chenab and Sutlej, triggering dangerous surges that have now entered Multan Division.
According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), extremely high flood levels were recorded at Harike downstream and Manawar Tawi, while flow in both Chenab and Sutlej continues to rise. The Indian High Commission formally notified Pakistan regarding the release of water from Akhnoor into the Chenab, raising the risk of extreme pressure at Head Marala.
Authorities warned that villages surrounding Gujrat and Wazirabad could be submerged due to rising water levels between Head Marala and Head Khanki. Current discharge levels are alarming: 112,000 cusecs at Chiniot Barrage, 233,000 cusecs at Trimmu Barrage, and 169,000 cusecs at Panjnad Headworks. Meanwhile, water flow at Ganda Singh Wala is estimated at 269,000 cusecs, but gauges to measure inflow have gone missing.
In a dramatic development, district authorities at Head Sidhnai blew up the Mai Saffora embankment with explosives to prevent catastrophic damage from mounting water pressure. The controlled breach was carried out after shutting down local traffic, diverting floodwaters toward uninhabited areas. However, thousands of acres of agricultural land now face inundation.
Rescue and district administrations are on high alert, moving residents from vulnerable villages to safer ground. DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that the Pakistan Army, civil administration, and rescue teams are working together to protect lives and minimize damage.
The flood surge has already swept into Multan Division, submerging dozens of settlements. With flood barriers under immense pressure, residents fear further destruction as the water flow continues to intensify.
