Peshawar( KhyberPoint)Flour prices in Peshawar have once again witnessed a sharp increase, causing concern among households already struggling with rising living costs. Within just two days, the price of a 20-kilogram bag of mixed flour jumped by Rs. 150, climbing from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 2,150. Similarly, the price of a 20-kilogram fine flour bag rose by Rs. 100, reaching Rs. 2,300 in the city’s markets.
According to the Flour Dealers Association, disruptions in the supply of wheat and flour from Punjab remain the primary reason behind the price hike. Supply chain bottlenecks have created instability in availability, allowing prices to fluctuate sharply and adding financial pressure on consumers.
Badruddin Kakar, Chairman of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association, criticized the restrictions on wheat and flour transportation imposed by the Punjab government. He demanded the immediate removal of inter-provincial barriers and check posts, arguing that these restrictions not only disrupt supply but also create artificial shortages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The rising prices are hitting low-income families the hardest, as flour remains a staple in daily diets. Many citizens have expressed frustration, questioning why the government has failed to ensure stable supply and pricing of such an essential commodity. With inflation already at high levels, the flour crisis risks further eroding public confidence in price control mechanisms.
Economic analysts warn that unless the government takes swift measures to restore smooth inter-provincial trade of wheat and flour, the situation may worsen, potentially sparking wider public discontent. For now, consumers are left to absorb the impact of yet another surge in essential food costs, with little relief in sight.
